Christmas in Colombia: Little Candles, Big Celebrations

Christmas in Colombia is celebrated with several festive, joyful, and meaningful traditions!

In addition going all out on Christmas lights and decorations, Colombians start the holiday off with Día de las Velitas, or Day of the Little Candles, on December 7th by illuminating their streets and homes with candles. Several homes also put together elaborate displays of the Christmas Nativity scene.

In the days leading up to Christmas, families keep their children entertained with ”Juegos del Aguinaldos” - fun games and challenges for all ages to enjoy. Families also come together to Novena de Aguinaldos, during which prayers are performed in remembrance of the Virgin Mary, St. Joseph, the Wise Men, and Baby Jesus.

Lastly, but most importantly, the holiday is celebrated with delicious food! A key component of a traditional Colombian Christmas meal is the dessert portion, where "Natilla," a creamy custard dish, is served alongside yummy buñuelos.
